Why do YOU walk?
Members of the Colorado-Wyoming MS community have submitted their stories to share with you. We hope that reading about the courage, challenges, and optimism experienced by those whose lives are affected by MS will motivate you to register, volunteer or donate to Walk MS.

I woke up on December 1, 2010, at age 38, with an extremely painful and swollen hand. I recall it as being the longest day of my life. After x-rays and blood work, the doctor determined the cause to be Lupus. Then it was one diagnosis after another and in 2002, I was told I also have MS. By 2003, I was forced to give up my career.
As my illnesses progressed, I felt depressed, isolated, and guilty for being such a burden. I had lost my independence. Then, in 2009, I was asked to participate in Walk MS Colorado Springs. I was in a wheelchair and reluctant, but agreed. Since then, I’ve found the NMSS functions I’ve attended have met my yearning for a support system. At one get-together, I realized I could not understand the difficulties of being a caregiver, any more than my husband could appreciate what these disorders do to my body and soul. It was a turning point and I knew it was time to act. I am now the trained facilitator of the Fremont/Custer County National MS Society’s Self-Assist Group. We have 20 members, strength is building and friendships are growing.
I have learned and gained so much since becoming a part of the National MS Society “Family”. As our group “motto” goes…We CAN Fight IT Better TOGETHER! We walk together in hopes of a Cure for MS, so that our children’s and grandchildren’s generations won’t have to Fight IT.
