WALK MS STORIES

Why do YOU walk?

Members of the Colorado-Wyoming MS community have submitted their stories to share with you. We hope that reading about the courage, challenges, and optimism experienced by those whose lives are affected by MS will motivate you to register, volunteer or donate to Walk MS.

Larry, Ruth & Byron Head – This is why we walk

Larry and Ruth Head from Hotchkiss, Colorado, have two sons. Their son Bryon was born in 1963. He was energetic, athletic and loved to fix cars. In 1983, after graduating high school, Byron moved to Denver to attend diesel mechanic school. In September of that same year, he went numb on his right side and began having problems with his vision. For the next several years Byron traveled back and forth between Hotchkiss and Denver seeing doctors and going to school. In 1987, an MRI was able to finally diagnose Byron with multiple sclerosis. Today, Byron lives in Hotchkiss and is cared for by his parents.

Ruth and Larry and their family and friends have been walking in Walk MS for 18 years. Ruth has been the #1 fundraiser for Walk MS Grand Junction for many years. Cumulatively, Ruth has raised over $112,000. She sends letters to everyone they know. Ruth continues to walk, and volunteer at Walk MS her on medical issues as well as Larry’s. Ruth and Larry say the MS Society has answered their questions and supported their family during difficult times, and feel that their son Byron is the reason to support the National MS Society. Ruth wants to do all she can so one day others won’t have to watch their loved ones go through what Byron has gone through. Ruth says, “If we don’t do it, who’s going to do it?”
